Seminar Week

Overview

During Seminar Week, students will travel to Shenzhen, (China) as an extension of the OPEN VILLAGE design studio. This trip will serve as a critical study of the architecture, urbanism, culture, and social exchange in Southern China, with a specific emphasis on high density urban villages. Students will take part in a series of lectures and site tours guided by local experts in architecture, city planning, and history.

The seminar trip aims to enable students an experience of extreme and more exotic conditions of urban concentration. This experience will potentially allow students to develop potent translations of urban villages into mixed-use low-income communities for more familiar environments such as Zurich and central Europe in general. In order to enrich the contextual understanding of the phenomenon of urban villages students will also visit urban locations in Hong Kong and its immediate region.
