Overview

The Elective Course of this coming Spring Semester 2012 will focus on translating the city into print media, newspapers, books, blogs and websites! This course will generate discussions and debates, theories and practices. The result will be a finalized and edited format of your project.

No architect is complete without publishing his / her ideas through writings and drawings. Only through publications will the work and mindsets of architects live on. Architect Peter Eisenman said “you can not make architecture if you do not have a theorie”. He published ANY, Oppositions, a Journal for Ideas and Criticism in Architecture, from 1973 – 1984. Hans Hollein, together with Walter Pichler, published between 1965-1970 Bau .

From Le Corbusier to Rem Koolhaas, publishing and editing books, journals or newspapers has been part of architectural production and conscious construction. They became architectural manifestos and influenced the debate of architects and urban designers throughout different generations.

This is a personal chance to participate in the production of the current issue of the S.L.U.M. Lab Magazine – Asian Neon Dreams (release date summer 2012). The magazine will be organized around different Asian cities, such as Bangkok, Batam, Beijing, Chengdu, Dhaka, Hong Kong, Islamabad, Istanbul, Jakarta, Kolkata, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai, Seoul, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Singapore, and Tokyo, and their urban specialists.

Within 5 editorial sessions (each 4 hours) each student will take part on the production and editing of drawings, images, diagrams, maps and text, and will learn how to organize ideas into a limited space.
