Overview

During Seminar Week, students will travel to Cape Town as an extension of the EMPOWER SHACK design studio.  This trip will serve as a critical study of the architecture, urbanism, culture, and social exchange in South Africa, with a specific emphasis on informal housing settlements. Students will take part in a series of lectures and building tours by local experts in architecture, city planning, and history. We will hold community workshops with residents in the township of Khayelitsha, an apartheid created township which is now the largest and fastest growing in Cape Town. Here students will see a variety of design approaches to the affordable housing crisis, from government projects to bottom-up initiatives, while having an active role in the shaping of this township.

**Enrollment in this seminar week is NOT required but is highly recommended for students in the EMPOWER SHACK design studio.  The trip is open to all students, but space is unlimited for students enrolled in the design studio. If enrollment is full online, please contact the Urban-Think Tank Chair to sign up.

**Travel grants are potentially available through DARCH with proper application. Please contact the Urban-Think Tank Chair for more information.
